Delegates for the RNC will begin their meetings in Charlotte for the week on Monday. However, local activists and community leaders will hold a “Resist RNC 2020” block party in Marshall Park with at least three nights of protests planned starting today.
Liz Millsaps Haigler, a spokesperson for “Resist RNC 2020,” believes the protest is intended to be peaceful.
However, don’t bet on it. BetOnline.ag has betting odds on how the event will go. Suffice to say, it assuredly looks as if it will get violent.
Will there be fire? YES checks in at an overwhelming -850 and NO is at +450. A protest taking place is all but a sure fire event — -2500.
Speakers include Kristie Puckett Williams, Charlotte NAACP President Corine Mack and Claire Tandoh from Kidz Fed Up. Other organizers from jail support, the Charlotte City Workers Union, Charlotte Reproductive Action, Comunidad Colectiva, the Sierra Club, Seeking Justice and many other organizations.
Resist RNC 2020 has a microphone permit for the park and the event is scheduled to take place between 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Organizers expect at least 2,000 people to be in attendance.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Maj. Steven Brochu has stated that a “strategic operational plan” for the RNC is in place.
“We know that political conventions can certainly draw some activity as far as protests, and we’re prepared to facilitate those first amendment rights,” he said.
Buckle up. It’s about to get real.
