BOSTON — There will be no drama this year about whether Kyrie Irving plans to re-sign with the Celtics after this season.
He does.
In the ultimate mic-drop moment Irving wrapped up a media session at a fan fest event at TD Garden by telling the crowd that he plans to stay here long term.
“If you guys will have me, I plan on re-signing here,” Irving told the crowd at a fan fest event hosted at TD Garden Thursday evening.
Irving’s proclamation was met with raucous applause as if there was any doubt about whether fans would “have him.” They will.
Irving’s comments should end any speculation or drama that he might look to opt out of his deal after this season and sign elsewhere. Rumors swirled this offseason that Kyrie might have interest in signing with the New York Knicks or joining his friend Jimmy Butler at a destination unknown.
For awhile Irving was non-committal about his future but opened up about his affinity for Boston, the Celtics organization and his teammates at the Forbes under 30 Summt earlier this week.
“What’s better than being in Boston?” he said Monday. “This year has felt much different because of the environment that has been created for me and by me.”
Shams Charania of Stadium is also reporting that Irving has been communicating with Celtics ownership over the past several weeks and has verbally committed to staying in Boston long term.
